Bourne Conspiracy

Sunday 12 July - On a day of unsettled weather conditions, a select few witnessed the Management stamp their authority on the inaugural Regional Over 50s event with Machiavellian efficiency and a clean sweep in the four-round snake, closely followed by the Cottons on three wins
Dave and Mick, of Houghton Wanderers fame, lost their way in the first semi final as Grandad Pallett and Ferrero Ashby swept into the Final from 1-9 down with a 2, a 6 and a 4 in successive ends. In the other semi final Kath and Stone reversed their earlier result against Karen and a recuperating Mike with surprising ease
In a battle of contrasting styles a keenly contested Final ebbed and flowed. Blocking out the threat of crowd trouble from a nearby impromptu game of football, the President recaptured his renowned pointing proficiency to plunder the prize
In what will forever be known as the Twelfth of July - The Battle of the Bourne, the Baggie Blousered Pantherists sashayed into the sunset, the proud possessors of their first ever Regional Title shirts
Meanwhile the debate rages on as to the best route from Bourne to Leicester

Double Delight

Sunday 14 June - For those privileged to be there and for one young man in particular, the icing, the cherry and the candles all arrived at once in the East Midlands Regional Doubles at the Plough, Ratby. A strong entry featured many of our best players and included eight previous EMPA title winners and three fearless juniors. In a manner that has come to be known as 'doing a Germany' Dan and Simon squeezed into the semi finals on 'goal difference' from a clutch of teams on three wins. Up against the experience of ten times Regional winner Stone and the relentless pointing of Rob from the Air Hostess, they stared defeat in the face at 8-12 down but upped their game another gear. And 'the fat lady' held her breath. Saving countless 'match points' Dan and Simon clinched the deal, with the Pocket Rocket twice notching three consecutive hits under the ultimate pressure. Sporting lore dictates that anti-climax follows a hard fought victory - but this time the script went out of the window. Joe and Lisa had marched inexorably into the final as favourites with a 'perfect six' wins but their opponents did not allow them to settle. Saving their best til last, Dan and Simon calmly wrapped up the championship with blistering tactics and technical efficiency. Aged twelve and a half, Daniel is the youngest ever Regional title winner and will represent the East Midlands with Simon, Joe and Lisa in the national Champion of Champions Doubles on October 10

Good news and bad news

Good news
Word of more success for the East Midlands Juniors, in the shape of England call-ups, is spreading like wildfire. Daniel travels to Luxembourg for the 11th & 12th of July and Ben to Belgium the following weekend (18th and 19th July)

... and bad news
Claytons Sports and Social Club is closing on 12 June and Lincoln Branleys Petanque Club have to vacate the premises. Referring to this setback euphemistically as "a bit of bother", secretary Liz is launching the club's fifth search for a new home. In the meantime the Martin Birkhead Trophy event, scheduled for 21 June, has to be cancelled. The Stimpson Autumn Trophy Doubles, scheduled for 18 October remains on the calendar in the hope of better times just around the corner

The Carnage Commences

Notorious as slow starters to a season, the East Midlands crew have bucked that trend emphatically in early skirmishes:
Easter Sunday saw Simon and Daniel lead the assault in an advance on Lincoln where, by laying waste to all in their path, they lifted the Lee Road Club's first Doubles Trophy of the new season
Breaking off only to brush the blood from his blade, the Panther's protégé persevered northwards to pillage the Yorkshire Open Triples title at Darlington on Bank Holiday Moday
Meanwhile on the southern flank ...
Agincourt revisited: on the site where Baggies vanquished the mighty Half Crown in the epic EuroCup battle of 2012, Dougie, Jane and Adam raided the Warwickshire Club to capture their Easter Monday Triples trophy

EMPA Juniors hit new heights

We're very pleased to be able now to report that the East Midlands Juniors dominated the recent National Junior Squad Day at Whittlesey capturing 1st, 3rd, 5th and 12th places. Daniel, Ben, Jack and Megan all shone on the day with the Panthers' pocket rocket topping the table and putting further pressure on any 'minimum age rule'. Rumours of the Regional YDO's arrest for launching celebratory fireworks over the Thurmaston bypass are only a slight exaggeration
